I think that far too many Christians have no certainty of who they are--because--their understanding of the gospel leaves them with no certainty of WHOSE we are. For all that many Christians know, God has already "foreknown" that they will wind up among billions of people who are NOT His "forevermore." If our identity as God's children depends on OUR performance--bottom line--then only the very blind and falsly self-confident can "feel" secure in their identity. But not so with those who have gained (through the hard knocks of life) enough horsesense to know that their performance is not very predictable or reliable! These folks will NOT have any secure and solid sense of identity.Just pondering here... But are many Christians like amnesia victims, in so many words, asking each other AND the world, "Will you please tell me who I am?" That is why so much show biz operates in much of churchianity, I'm persuaded. Disoriented Christians with no sense of intrinsic and eternal value/identity/purpose "need" others (many of which also have no identity) to tell them, in a manner of speaking-- "Ah yes! You did GOOD! You are very good at your preaching, praise leading and Christian drama! We know that you HAVE to be a child of God!"
Is it any wonder that the world is turned off by much that calls itself "ministry" that comes from organized/agonized churchianity? Horrors! Christians are asking the WORLD to affirm and approve of them, and thus reassure them of their value and identity. To tell them who they ARE. But this kind of amnesia will continue in the body of Christ as long as the lie is perpetuated, "And I, if I be lifted up will draw *ONLY A FEW* people to Myself." For how can anyone except the blindly arrogant be certain that they will wind up among the few sons and daughters of God who somehow have managed to outperform most of the human race?
