: I never connected Jer 19 with Matt 23 until ***** mentioned
the two passages together in his post below.
: Although I understood that the "hell" Jesus used in
Matt 23 wasn't the same man-created hell that many understand it to be,
I still could not figure out what the audience listening to him understood
him to mean when he says in Matt 23:33...
: "You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape
being condemned to hell?

: 9 "`In this place I will ruin [1] the plans of Judah
and Jerusalem. I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies,
at the hands of those who seek their lives, and I will give their carcasses
as food to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth... …
: 11 `This is what the LORD Almighty says: I will smash
this nation and this city just as this potter's jar is smashed and cannot
be repaired. They will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more
room.
: So, when the religious Jewish audience of the day, being
quite familiar with the predictions of the prophets of old, heard Jesus
say those words, they assumed he was referring to Jeremiah's prophecies.
And not only was he referring to them, he proclaimed their fulfillment
in his own generation. (see Matt 23:36)
: Jesus was in essence saying...

a shameful and contemptable death brought on by God's righteous judgement!"
: Is this an accurate understanding of these passages?

If you read books 5 and 6 of Josephus' "War of the Jews,"
you would see a perfect fulfilment of all that Jesus said about that last
generation of Jews under the Old Covenant. Jesus spoke of being thrown
into Gehenna, the city dump. That is exactly what happened to the bodies
of the very Pharisees to whom he spoke, they killed each other inside the
surrounded city of Jerusalem and then their bodies where cast by the thousands
over the Southwest wall of the city right into what we today incorrectly
call Hell, that is, Gehenna, the city dump, a place that Israel in the
past (not God) killed their own offspring. I think there is an online version
